Road Crashes Spike Dramatically during Pchum Ben Holidays according to Road Traffic Accidents and Victim Information System (RTAVIS) statistics

During the annual Pchum Ben Festival, road crashes and casualties on the roads of Cambodia increase dramatically as families hit the roads to return to their home provinces to celebrate this important festival.

According to Road Traffic Accident and Victim Information System (RTAVIS) report, during the seven-day Pchum Ben travel period in 2007, 48 people died and 889 others were injured by road crashes in Cambodia.  By comparison, an average of 26 died and 383 injured weekly throughout the calendar year.  Similar trends were also apparent during the 2005 and 2006 Pchum Ben Festivals.

The report highlights that 45% of all casualties during Pchum Ben were involved in speed-related crashes, followed by dangerous overtaking at 19%, and drink-driving at 14%. Low helmet wearing rates also account for the high percentage of head trauma casualties during the Festival’s travel period. 39% percent of motorbike users suffered head injuries in crashes; 96% of those were not wearing helmets.  National roads are particularly deadly with the increased volume of traffic.  National Roads #5 and #6 in particular have the highest accident and casualty rates over Pchum Ben 2007.

The seven-day Pchum Ben travel period for 2008 runs from Friday September 26th to Thursday October 2nd, 2008.

Handicap International Belgium would like to urge all road users in Cambodia to drive carefully during this festival period, particularly to reduce speed, avoid alcohol when planning to drive and to wear helmets.  It is worth remembering that drivers who speed or drink drive put everyone on the road at risk.  All motorcycle drivers and passengers should wear helmets and ensure that they are fastened properly to avoid serious head injury.    Passenger overloading on public transport should also be avoided.

Furthermore, Handicap International Belgium would like to urge the national traffic police to enforce the traffic law during the Pchum Ben festival in order to reduce the large number of crashes and casualties throughout this travel period

To raise awareness on risky driving behavior and the importance of road safety during the Pchum Ben festival, Handicap International Belgium will be running public education campaigns on television, radio and the internet.  Street-level activities will also be conducted targeting the general public around taxi stations, markets and on selected Phnom Penh roads from September 24th to 26th.

I still saw many road accidents during this Pchum Ben holidays. Lucky that i weren’t in that traffic jam.

The road accident happening is because of the carelessness of human being. They drive carelessly and high speed. According to recent report of road accident this year, the number of accident is decreasing more than the previous year.

I completely agree 100%. Most of the accidents are cause by carelessness and reckless driver. Stay focus is the key to avoid all that.

    Learn to Cook Healthy Food

When I first discovered Samahria Ramsen’s “Romancing the Stove” recipes I felt tremendously empowered...It is good to learn to cook the healthly food so whenever you hungry you can make your own favorite healthly food at all time. I just feel like lazy to learn sometime but desire to eat the good food which everyone wants it too. ;)

In Cambodia, we have many different type of food which most of them are my favorite. According to my observation most cambodian can cook food since they learn to cook it since they are young age from their family members. Eating good food is good for our physical health.

Home cooked meal is much safer than those in restaurant and food stalled in public places, of course, is more tasty if the right spices and method of cooking is done right.

Cambodia has veriety of fresh vegetables and meats which make cooking much more easy.

Healthy eating and regular exercise can help us a lot in term of physical well being and avoid certain element illness cause by junk food which tends to put us on heavy side of the scale [gain or over weight - causing diebetes, hypertension Etc..]

Just out side the note, can you suggest me any web hosting as I plan to have a private web site rather than using the free one

    Infected Injuries Biggest Health Problem

My OwieWhat are infected injuries? When we are talking about infected injury it seems too broad to say. From wikipedia we can find some definition to the infectected injury like AIDS, Herpes simplex, Tracheobronchial injury, reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerou occurrences regulations, feline leukemia virus, sphaeopis blight, sexually transmitted disease, hepatitis A, ebola, and Traaumatic brain injury…etc.

It is like in this case during the earthquake and tsunami, there were many injured.

Broken bones and infected wounds are the biggest health problems facing staff in overflowing hospitals in Indonesia’s shattered Aceh province, United Nations officials said.Doctors..we don´t need doctors!

The emergency aid and the right treament is very important for such problem.

Schools to Adopt National Anti-Smoking Curriculum

Official hope that highlighling the risks of smoking at a young age will keep children from ever starting.

    By May Titthara,

The Phnom Penh Post, Septeber 12, 2008

A program by the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport warning of the dangers of smoking cigarettes will soon be part of the national school curriculum, officials told the Post Thursday.

“Cigarettes share similar properties with opium,” said Ton Sa Im, director of the ministry’s Pedagogy Research Department. “Smokers have difficulties in quitting smoking, even though it seriously damages their health and that of anyone near them.”

She said the ministry is currently updating textbooks for primary and secondary schools, targeting biology and social studies lessons. “We want students to know the dangers of smoking and avoid starting,” she said. She said the curriculum will specifically target secondary students, as smoking rates among this age group are most worrying to government officials. Krisna Keo, project manager for the Adventis Development and Relief Agency Cambodia, said he hopes the school porgram will prevent young people from ever starting to smoke.

“We want students to know the dangers of smoking and avoid starting.”

“Some 7.9 percent of children aged 13 to 15 years smoke cigarettes everyday,” he said, adding that one percent of that number are girls. He said 53.9 percent of all Cambodians smoke cigarettes, of which nine percent are female. “They smoke because tobacco companies advertise on television and radio,” Krisna Keo said. “They sponsor concerts and promote their products by giving away free samples and telling young poeple they will look handsome if they smoke.”

Krisna Keo said many children also suffer because they live in households where family members smoke. They learn by example or sufer the effects of second-hand smoke. “Children should know about the health problems they are liekly to suffer if they decide to start smoking, including lung cancer and manage to their blood vessels,” he said.

He said tobacco companies should be prohibited from advertising in print or broadcasting media and the government should impose anti-smoking laws in public spaces.

Meth Rina, 36, a teacher at Tuol Sleng primary school, said the new curriculum could have a big impact on her studnets. “Younger people will be less likely to start smokimng because teachers will explain the serious health risks,” she said.

Some 5.4 million people die each year from smoking-related disease, according to the World Health Organization. That figure could reach 8.3 million by the year 2030. About 80 percent of those deaths occur in developing counties suffering from extreme poverty, according to WHO estimates.

    • angkor138 5:23 pm on September 12, 2008 Permalink

It’s good to hear that school will adopt anti-smoking as part of curriculum.

The question is how effective would it be in term of persuading young people not to fall into trap of bad habit [easy to hook on but hard to quit], which will damage their health [smoking related lung and heart disease are most common, vein disorder - gangrene] and cuase financial burden to self and family [family budget] if cigarette companies are able freely advertised on the street, sponsored an event or concert, and seller failure to ask if the person is over 18 years old.

Most students did not smoke at school or at home but in public areas, on an outing with friends and away from their parents.

At the same time people shall educate about passive smoker[s] who is most vulnerable to conceive smkoe related disease than smokers themselves.

The question is how to protect passive smoker, shall smoking be banned in all enclosed areas? [aircon room, within the vacinity of restaurant, pubs, night club Etc..]

    • Piseth 6:53 pm on September 12, 2008 Permalink

I personally don’t like the smoke that come out from the cigarette but i have a pity for those who smoke. Smoking is the learning process who without getting information or seeing other people the young people or children will not learn to smoke.

Basically speaking, banning not to smoke is the best way. Of course this policy will affect many businesses and people. But it is good for the world.

    • angkor138 3:50 am on September 13, 2008 Permalink

Can’t see the world as a “Free Smoke” zone for fact that many country in the world has benefits from cigarette in terms of state coffer through tax and levy and is said to inject into health care system or medical research. But one consencious agreement is to ban cigarette from Advertising in public, carry health warning label.
